Tensions flared in Makurdi, Benue State, on Sunday morning as angry youths took to the streets, blocking the Wurukum Roundabout in protest over the recent mass killing in Yelewata, Guma Local Government Area.
The protest, sparked by the reported murder of over 200 people by suspected armed herdsmen, brought traffic to a standstill, stranding hundreds of commuters traveling between northern and southern Nigeria.
The demonstrators, defying government warnings against unlawful assemblies, expressed outrage over the continued violence and demanded immediate action from authorities. They accused the government of abandoning communities repeatedly targeted by attackers and failing to provide adequate security.
The blockade caused significant disruption, with motorists trapped in gridlock and panic spreading among residents and travelers.
“We are tired of watching our people die while the government looks the other way,” one protester said. “We need justice, and we need protection.”
The protest underscores growing frustration among residents of Benue State, who have long called for stronger measures to address the recurring attacks in rural communities.
As of the time of this report, security personnel had been deployed to the area to monitor the situation and restore order.
