LAGOS: Managing Director of UpdateAfrika Communications, Dr. Joseph Effiong, has attributed the growth in Lagos State's revenu, reaching an all-time high of N1 trillion to ongoing reforms and the digitized tax system in the state.
Specifically, the communication expert praised the state's tax agency, the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS), under the leadership of Mr. Ayo Subair, for this giant leap driven by strategic intentionality.
In recent times, LIRS has distinguished the state's taxation system through initiatives such as a web-based platform that offers taxpayers convenient online access to tax payments, return filings, and document retrieval that includes tax clearance certificates.
According to the agency, its service upgrade is aimed at improving efficiency and reducing office congestion by allowing taxpayers to carry out transactions remotely.
Effiong remarked that the agency has surpassed expectations in this regard, citing the swift processing of tax clearance certificates, which he said has favoured the economy.
"The state's revenue profile and testimonies of taxpayers attest to the ease and gains of this initiative. Implementing electronic tax clearance certificates for personal income tax has simplified the entire process, now allowing individuals to obtain their certificates within 24 hours.
"By leveraging technology, the LIRS has also succeeded in fostering voluntary compliance among citizens and businesses, which is already having a positive impact on the economy," he said.
He encouraged other states to embrace enhanced taxation strategies to strengthen public trust in government, improve taxpayer compliance, and ultimately drive national revenue growth.
