Award-winning Nigerian singer and songwriter Tems has unveiled the ‘Leading Vibe’ Initiative, a groundbreaking platform designed to empower young women in the music industry across Africa, with ambitions for global outreach.
The initiative, which officially launches in Lagos, aims to address the stark underrepresentation of women in music by providing aspiring female artists, songwriters, and producers with access to critical tools, training, and industry networks.
Drawing from her personal journey as a self-taught artist who rose to prominence in a male-dominated industry, Tems said the initiative is a response to the barriers many women face in music, especially in roles behind the scenes.
“There are thousands of young women just like me with a voice, a gift and a desire to be heard,” Tems said. “I want to be someone who shows people that there’s hope because I know the most heartbreaking thing is to see a light dimmed and a fire never ignited.”
Set to kick off in Lagos, the Leading Vibe Initiative will offer participants hands-on mentorship, training sessions, and access to state-of-the-art music production tools, thanks to a partnership with global music tech company Native Instruments.
The program targets female creatives aged 18 to 35 based in Nigeria, with applications open until July 13.
Tems emphasized that the initiative is about creating a movement—one that supports women who dare to dream differently. “While the music industry is great, there hasn’t always been a space for women—women creators, women producers, women engineers, women writers,” she noted.
“The Leading Vibe is a movement, it’s a network, it’s a wave built for women, by women—from the continent to the world,” she added. “Now is the time to rise, to be seen, to be heard, to believe and to bet on yourself.”
By launching the Leading Vibe Initiative, Tems hopes to build a supportive ecosystem that nurtures and amplifies the voices of women in music, helping shape a more inclusive future for the industry.
