Renowned media personality IK Osakioduwa has opened up about the personal journey behind changing his surname from “Obiara” to “Osakioduwa,” a decision he says significantly transformed his life.
Speaking in an interview on The Nancy Isime Show, IK shared that his decision was inspired by the biblical story of Jacob, who was renamed Israel after a life-changing encounter with God. The story prompted him to reflect deeply on his own identity and question the meaning behind his original surname.
“I thought to myself, I’m almost a full-on adult. And I’m still saying I’m so-and-so’s son? That moment made me realise I needed to wake up and start building my own identity,” he said.
During his research, IK discovered that “Obiara” had associations with a deity — something that conflicted with his Christian beliefs. Determined to redefine himself, he set out to adopt a new name aligned with his faith and aspirations.
“What followed was a four-year effort to convince my father to approve the change,” he revealed. “With silent support from my mother and much prayer, I eventually chose ‘Osakioduwa’.”
The name “Osakioduwa” means “God opens the door to wealth,” a meaning IK says has become a reality in his life. He credits the name change with opening doors to wealth and numerous opportunities.
“That name changed my life. My door to wealth opened,” he added.
