Mrs. Gladys Kanu, widow of the late Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu, has expressed deep appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for bestowing a posthumous national honour on her husband in recognition of his contributions to Nigeria’s democracy.
During his address to the National Assembly on June 12, President Tinubu conferred the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) on Admiral Kanu, celebrating his enduring legacy as a pro-democracy hero and key figure in the struggle to actualize the historic June 12, 1993 election, widely regarded as Nigeria’s freest and fairest.
Born on November 3, 1943, in Ovim, Isikwuato Local Government Area of Abia State, Admiral Kanu passed away on January 13, 2021, at the age of 77. He was a revered naval officer, military administrator, businessman, and democracy advocate. He was known for his steadfast role in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) and allied pro-democracy movements that fought for the revalidation of the annulled June 12 election won by Chief MKO Abiola.
In a statement personally signed, Mrs. Kanu conveyed her gratitude on behalf of herself and the family. “I wish to thank the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces for the conferment of national honours on my husband and the father of our children, Admiral Godwin Ndubuisi Kanu,” she stated.
She emphasized her late husband’s principled character and unwavering commitment to the democratic cause, noting that he remained active in the struggle for 28 years—from 1993 until his passing in 2021.
Recalling his dedication to NADECO, she said, “On the days of NADECO meetings in our house, he would call me during working hours to invite my best caterers for a sumptuous buffet for the members. He never wavered in the pursuit of democratic ideals.”
Admiral Kanu’s career was marked by notable service to the nation.
During the Nigerian Civil War, he initially fought on the Biafran side before rejoining his former colleagues in the Nigerian military after the war ended. In 1975, he was appointed to the Supreme Military Council under General Murtala Mohammed. Later, under the leadership of General Olusegun Obasanjo, he served as the military governor of the old Imo State and subsequently of Lagos State.
Mrs. Kanu described him as a patriot, humanist, and nationalist whose legacy continues to inspire Nigerians in the quest for good governance and democratic ideals.
