A public analyst, Dr Joseph Effiong has urged the federal government to treat the spate of killings in Nigeria with the same immediacy and urgency it responded to the threat of invasion by U.S President, Donald Trump.

This followed the warning by the U.S President, Donald Trump on potential cut of aid to Nigeria, alongside military deployment of forces or air strikes to stop alleged killing of Christians in Nigeria.

In a statement on Tuesday, Effiong who is the Chairman of UpdateAfrika Communications worried that successive administrations have failed to act decisively against armed groups who now feel emboldened to act without fear or consequence.

“These attacks have been happening for years. Why should terrorists feel comfortable in our beloved country?

"It is notable that various stakeholders have swiftly responded to Donald Trump's threat, however, this would have been more impactful if similar attention were demonstrated by government in addressing Nigerians' plight prior to the international attention", he said.

Effiong affirmed that security remains a moral duty, submiting that economic gains are meaningless without citizens' safety.

Meanwhile, the presidency has publicly rejected characterisations of violence in the country as genocidal, noting that it welcomes international support so long as Nigeria’s sovereignty is respected.

Spokesman for Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa said, " We recognise the security challenges the country is facing, but the claim that only Christians are being targeted is false. There is no Christian genocide in Nigeria.

“We have consistently stated that, yes, killings have occurred, but they are not limited to Christians. Muslims have been killed, traditional worshippers have been killed.Christians are not the majority among the victims".

Effiong maintained that terrorism must not be allowed to take root in the country, stressing those behind it be brought to book.

"Government must act decisively to deny extremists any safe haven", he said.
