Suspended Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has reacted to the declaration of a state of emergency in the state, calling for calm and reaffirming his commitment to peace, constitutional order, and the rule of law.
In a press statement on Tuesday, Fubara described the political crisis in Rivers State as an “unfortunate moment” in the state’s history but assured citizens that his administration had remained dedicated to protecting lives and property while ensuring progress.
“Since assuming office as your Governor, all my actions and decisions have been guided by my constitutional oath of office and a great sense of duty,” he said.
He recalled that following President Bola Tinubu’s intervention in the political crisis, his administration took steps to implement the agreed terms in good faith, including reinstating commissioners who had earlier resigned. He also stated that his government swiftly complied with the Supreme Court’s judgment to restore normalcy in the state.
“These steps were taken not for personal gains but to foster peace, unity, and stability in our dear state,” he noted.
However, Fubara accused the Rivers State House of Assembly of frustrating his administration’s peace efforts, making genuine governance difficult. Despite these challenges, he emphasized that salaries had been paid, key projects were ongoing, and the state remained safe and peaceful.
“Yes, we have political disagreements, but good governance has continued,” he said.
He urged the people of Rivers State to remain law-abiding and assured them that efforts were underway to engage with relevant institutions to uphold democracy in the state.
“At this critical time, I urge all Rivers people to remain peaceful and law-abiding. We will engage with all relevant institutions to ensure that our democracy remains strong and that Rivers State continues to thrive,” he added.
Fubara concluded his statement by expressing confidence in the resilience of Rivers people and their ability to overcome the situation with wisdom and patience.
The crisis in Rivers State has seen heightened political tensions, with the state legislature at odds with the executive, leading to the federal government’s decision to impose a state of emergency.
