In Enugu State, a coordinated security operation involving the Nigerian Army, Police, and DSS successfully neutralized four suspected members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN). During the operation in Eha Alumona, Nsukka Local Government Area, security forces intercepted and thwarted an alleged plan by the suspects to attack areas within the state. Following a gun battle, several suspects escaped with injuries, while others were arrested, including an ESN commander linked to neighboring state operations. Recovered items included a stash of arms, ammunition, and other dangerous objects.
The operation aligns with Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah’s ongoing security reforms, aimed at eradicating criminal activities through initiatives like the Distress Response Squad (DRS) and advanced surveillance technology.
Separately, in Imo State, police attributed the recent bombing of Orlu International Market to IPOB/ESN. According to the state’s police spokesperson, Henry Okoye, two suspected IPOB members were killed when an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) they were carrying detonated prematurely, averting a potentially larger tragedy.
These incidents underscore ongoing security challenges in southeastern Nigeria, where authorities are intensifying efforts to curb criminal activities and enhance public safety.
