The Ondo State governorship election, scheduled for November 16, is set to be a close race between incumbent Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Deputy Governor Agboola Ajayi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Both candidates hail from the Ilaje area in Ondo South Senatorial District, and their contest reflects both personal and political history, having worked together under former Governor Rotimi Akeredolu before parting ways four years ago.

Governor Aiyedatiwa, benefiting from incumbency, is leaning on his party’s achievements and reforms, especially in education, health, and worker welfare. His supporters highlight his commitment to implementing a N73,000 minimum wage, positioning the APC as the preferred choice to maintain stability and progress. The APC has also gained strength with high-profile defections from opposition parties, including key former PDP leaders, which has further unified the party ahead of the election.

PDP candidate Agboola Ajayi, however, remains a strong contender, drawing on grassroots support. The PDP’s campaign is bolstered by concerns over APC’s promises, and PDP leaders like Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde assert that Ondo voters are ready for change. The PDP criticized APC’s national chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, for his remarks about "capturing" Ondo, which the PDP claimed reflects a strategy of control rather than true democratic choice.

Both parties are campaigning intensively across the state, seeking to energize their bases. APC’s national and Southwest leaders, including Governors Sanwo-Olu, Oyebanji, and Abiodun, have rallied to support Aiyedatiwa, emphasizing unity and development continuity. Conversely, the PDP vows to block any electoral malpractice, promising that Ajayi’s victory will reflect the people's choice. As November 16 approaches, all eyes are on Ondo, with both sides determined to claim the Alagbaka Government House in Akure.
