The Ogun State Government has again extended condolences to the family of Monday Arijo, a student who tragically died last Friday after reportedly receiving corporal punishment from a teacher at Obada Grammar School in Idi-emi.
This marks the second official visit by government representatives to the grieving family. The delegation, led by Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, underscored the government’s commitment to addressing the issue.
Prof. Arigbabu emphasized the importance of eliminating corporal punishment in all state-owned schools, urging teachers to explore alternative disciplinary methods. “The state government has set up a committee to investigate the cause and surrounding circumstances of this incident,” he stated. “Our goal is to learn from this and prevent similar tragedies, aligning with global standards that reject corporal punishment.”
In a statement on behalf of the family, Mr. Abdullateef Oduntan expressed their desire to avoid legal proceedings, instead calling on the government to ensure that such an incident is never repeated.
Special Adviser on Education, Mrs. Ronke Soyombo, assured the family of the government's continued support during this difficult time and reaffirmed their commitment to preventing similar occurrences.
A post-mortem is currently being conducted at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Abeokuta to determine the exact cause of Monday Arijo’s death. The outcome is expected to inform the government’s ongoing efforts to reform school disciplinary practices across Ogun State.
