Lagos State Suspends Reopening Of Churches And Mosques Indefinitely

NEWS - Posted on: 16th Jun. 2020 at 6:51PM

The Lagos State Government has announced the suspension of Reopening of Churches and Mosques in the State earlier scheduled for June 19 and 21, 2020.

This is not unconnected with the concerns raised by health workers and some religious leaders as the number of cases of the COVID-19 is unabating. Last week, some notable clergymen have said that in spite of the Government's lifting of the lockdown, their churches would not be reopening yet as it doesn't look safe out there. Pastor Tunde Bakare of the Latter Rain Assembly was vocal in his refusal to resume churches services come this Sunday.

Likewise, the Chief Imam of Lagos State told all mosques in the state to remain closed till further notice and he said the Muslim body is not ready to expose its faithful to the danger of the virus.

Medical experts have also warned that, in spite of NCDC's safety guidelines,  reopening of places of worship at this time will lead to a spike in the cases of the coronavirus, and should be avoided as community spread is on the increase. Lagos State is still the epicentre of the pandemic in Nigeria with a total of 216 new cases just yesterday.

Consequently, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwoolu said on Tuesday that churches should still remain closed indefinitely.
