The Kogi State Judiciary has established a special court dedicated to handling cases of energy theft, vandalism, and other electricity-related offences, in a move aimed at strengthening the protection of power infrastructure across the state.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday by the Head of Public Relations at the Kogi State Electricity Regulatory Commission (KSERC), Ali Atabor.
According to the statement, the establishment of the court was marked by an official inspection visit by the Kogi State Chief Judge, Justice Josiah Joe Majebi, and the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of KSERC, Engr. Ibrahim S. Abdwaaris. Justice Majebi announced that the court, which is now fully operational, will be presided over by Chief Magistrate Ajagu Oyiza Josephine Abedoh. He emphasized the judiciary’s commitment to ensuring that cases brought before the court will be handled with urgency.
“The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has provided a copy of practice directions to guide proceedings and enable speedy trials,” the Chief Judge added.
Earlier during the visit, Engr. Abdwaaris commended the Chief Judge for the prompt establishment of the special court and the appointment of a magistrate to oversee its activities. He assured that the commission, along with licensed electricity operators within the state, would fully support the court to ensure its smooth operation.
The creation of the special court is regarded as a significant milestone in the fight against power-related crimes in Kogi State. It is also expected to boost investor confidence and contribute to the sustainability of the state’s energy infrastructure.
With the court now in place, Kogi State Distribution Limited and other stakeholders can begin prosecuting offenders more effectively, helping to safeguard electricity assets and improve service delivery.
