Nollywood actress Iyabo Ojo has opened up about the personal experiences that fueled her outspoken support for comedienne Princess during the highly publicized alleged rape case involving actor Baba Ijesha.
Speaking during an episode of The Goldroom with Iyabo, the actress revealed that her own history of being molested multiple times deeply influenced her reaction to the case, leaving her emotionally charged and determined to speak out.
“I really didn’t control my emotions then because I was outraged by what happened,” Iyabo said. “I think it’s because I was also coming from that place, having gone through similar experiences — multiple times. I just felt like enough is enough; we need to start speaking out for both the girl and boy child.”
Iyabo expressed disappointment in how some adults, including figures within the entertainment industry, attempted to manipulate the narrative and shift blame onto the victim and Princess, who brought the allegations to light. She said the incident revealed how far society still needs to go in addressing sexual abuse and victim-blaming.
The actress stressed the importance of accountability among public figures, saying entertainers have a duty to lead by example and uphold strong moral values.
“We are also evangelists. If we’re acting in a movie and someone plays a bad role, that person gets punished. That’s how we preach. So we can’t preach one thing and do the opposite,” she said. “That’s why I speak out more when a known person does something wrong. I hold entertainers to a higher standard.”
Iyabo Ojo’s statements have reignited conversations about the role of celebrities in social justice issues and the need for stronger advocacy against sexual violence in Nigeria.
