The Federal Government has commenced the release of withheld salaries for members of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Federal Universities (NASU) in a conciliatory move to address longstanding salary arrears and provide support for university staff, some of whom have engaged in strike actions. The announcement was made by the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF) through a statement by Bawa Mokwa, Director of Press and Public Relations, on Saturday.
The OAGF confirmed that funds have been allocated not only for NASU members’ salaries but also to cover benefits for retirees under the Nigerian Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme Sector (NUPCPS). This demonstrates the government’s commitment to upholding pension obligations and addressing the welfare of retired workers.
Mokwa stated that payments to NASU members have already commenced, with many union members confirming receipt of their salaries. The fund release is expected to ease financial pressures on university staff and contribute to the stabilization of the federal university system.
“The Federal Government remains committed to efficiently catering to the welfare of Nigerian workers and retirees,” read the OAGF statement, reflecting ongoing efforts to provide timely financial support for public sector employees and pensioners. This development aligns with broader measures aimed at resolving financial grievances within Nigeria’s higher education sector and improving the welfare of both active and retired personnel.
