Breaking News: Justice Monica Dongban-mensem Confirmed As Appeal Court President
Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem has just been confirmed as the President of the Court of Appeal today after acting in that capacity since the retirement of her predecessor, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa in March.
The senate president had received a letter from President Muhammadu Buhari recommending her confirmation as substantive President of the Appellate Court. The letter was read on the floor of the house and a committee was set up to screen her to ensure her qualification and competence.
Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, chairman of the committee on judiciary and legal matters reported the committee's finding as stated below:
"The committee interviewed her and received an explanation about her career. The appointment of the nominee satisfies the requirements of the constitution as amended. Having screened the nominee and satisfied with her competence, the committee do recommend the confirmation of Monica Dongban-Mensem as the president of the court of appeal.
The nominee is a fit and proper person for appointment as the President of the Court of Appeal. The Committee recommends that the Senate do confirm the nomination of Hon. Justice M.B. Dongban-Mensem as Honourable President of the Court of Appeal."
After her confirmation, Senator Ike Ekweremadu responded by congratulating her. He said, "This is because Justice Mendem is succeeding a woman who served and retired in the same capacity.". He also urges her to put in more effort in reforming the judiciary especially in matters of Elections in Nigeria.
Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem was born on 13th June 1957, to the family of M.B. Douglas-Mensem; a retired Appeal Court Justice.
