The Benue State Police Command has detained five individuals over alleged identity theft and cyber fraud. This was announced in a statement by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Sewuese Anene, and shared with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Makurdi on Friday.

According to the statement, the suspects, aged between 18 and 21, were apprehended by the Cybercrime and Narcotics Department of the Command. Acting on intelligence reports, police operatives raided a hideout in Makurdi, leading to the arrest of the suspects.

“Exhibits recovered from them include: three iPhones, one small Tecno phone, and two other smartphones,” Anene disclosed. Investigations reveal that the suspects allegedly impersonated individuals to defraud unsuspecting victims of their belongings.

Benue State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Steve Yabanet, has urged residents to remain cautious of cybercriminal activities and reaffirmed the Command’s dedication to combating crime. He also warned those engaging in cybercrime in Benue State to cease their activities or face legal consequences. The suspects will be prosecuted upon completion of investigations.
