President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has commended President Bola Tinubu for signing into law the bills establishing three key tertiary institutions in Nigeria’s South-East geopolitical zone. The newly approved institutions include the Federal University, Okigwe in Imo State, and both the Federal College of Education and the Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences located in Bende, Abia State.
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Eseme Eyiboh, Akpabio praised the collaboration between the Senate and the House of Representatives in advancing the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He highlighted the importance of the institutions in addressing educational gaps, expanding research opportunities, and improving healthcare outcomes in the region.
The Senate President also lauded prominent lawmakers who championed the establishment of the institutions. These include Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu—sponsor of two of the bills—as well as Deputy Whip Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi and Deputy Minority Whip Senator Osita Ngwu. Akpabio also recognized Senator Patrick Ndubueze for his leadership in sponsoring one of the bills.
Akpabio described the initiative as a landmark move in advancing development and educational access in the South-East. He noted that President Tinubu’s gesture reflects an inclusive leadership style and a genuine effort to bridge historical divides and feelings of marginalization within the region.
“I applaud President Tinubu for his inclusive leadership and commitment to the development of the South-East. The establishment of these institutions represents a major step in addressing long-standing grievances and promoting national unity,” Akpabio stated.
He further urged the Igbo people to align themselves with the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, assuring them that continued support would attract greater democratic dividends.
Akpabio concluded by emphasizing that these institutions are vital not only for regional progress but also for national development.
