Dr Ahmad Lawan, President of the Senate has on Tuesday stated that political leaders are needed to intervene in the halting of herdsmen crises and the activities of bandits and kidnappers in Nigeria.
The Senate President who described leaders as problem-solvers made his stance known via a statement while noting that the political leaders have to unite against massive inhumane killings and criminality.
"Insurgency, bandit, kidnapping and militancy remain serious threats to a secured and safe Nigeria", Lawan stated whilst advising the leaders not to be distracted by divisive elements created to incite inter-ethnic tensions in the nation.
The Doctor appealed that Nigerians should remain calm in view of the recent inter-tribal trepidation across some South-Western part of Nigeria adding that the crises needed amalgamation of both the legislature and the executive power.
"Distinguished Colleagues, the very recent emergence of inter-ethnic and inter-tribal conflicts in some part of our country is worrisome. The Senate calls for calm. The situation also calls for leadership at all levels of government.
"Leaders must unite to fight and defeat criminality in the country. Leaders must also unite to fight any divisive and centrifugal sentiments and tendencies.
"Political leaders are problem solvers. As parliamentarians, we should search for possible legislation to address the issues that tend to create tensions amongst our people.
"We are going to consult and partner with all arms and tiers of government, in our quest for finding lasting solutions to these ugly developments", he said in a speech delivered during plenary to welcome lawmakers back from the Christmas/New Year recess.
