ACTOR AFEEZ ‘SAKA’ OYETORO OPENS UP ABOUT EARLY CAREER STRUGGLES AND LOVE LIFE

Veteran Nollywood actor Afeez Oyetoro, popularly known as Saka, has opened up about the financial hardships he faced early in his acting career and how they affected his self-esteem and romantic relationships.
In a recent interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, Saka reflected on the challenges he encountered before fame, revealing that his passion for acting was not initially matched by financial reward or societal recognition. According to him, actors at the time were often not taken seriously, and the lack of income made it difficult to build a stable life.
“I didn’t have confidence. It took me a long time to start toasting women,” he admitted. “There was no money in acting then, nobody recognised the actor. We were just doing it out of passion, and they did not teach us how to make money from theatre.”
He recounted how the inability to afford basic necessities, including a car, led many women to question his future prospects. One particularly painful memory involved a woman he had hoped to marry, who insisted he must own two cars before she would consider the relationship.
“She told me, ‘Why don’t you quit acting? You’re wasting your life. Leave this theatre and go do something relevant.’ That was very painful,” he shared. “Then, the one I was actually supposed to marry said I must have two cars before marriage. Something told me, ‘Afeez, this is not your wife,’ so I ran away.”
Saka eventually found love and stability later in life, marrying while he was pursuing his education. His story highlights the perseverance required to succeed in the entertainment industry and the sacrifices that often come with following one’s passion.
