Lagos, July 1, 2025 — As part of the ongoing Assisted Voluntary Returns (AVR) programme facilitated by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) in partnership with the Federal Government of Nigeria, 104 Nigerian returnees have arrived in Lagos from Algeria.
The returnees touched down at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport cargo terminal at approximately 1:50 p.m. on June 30, aboard an Air Algerie flight with flight number 70-BKT. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed the arrival in an official statement released Tuesday.
The group consisted of 80 adult males, 14 adult females, two male children, five female children, and three infants.
Upon arrival, the returnees were received by officials of the Nigerian Immigration Service and underwent biometric registration and documentation. NEMA, alongside partner agencies, provided immediate humanitarian support including food, water, medical care, ambulance services, luggage handling, and logistics assistance.
“This comprehensive support ensured a dignified and safe return for the citizens,” NEMA stated.
This latest operation follows a similar exercise on June 18, when NEMA received 147 Nigerian returnees from Agadez, Niger Republic. The AVR initiative aims to provide safe and voluntary return options for migrants stranded abroad and is coordinated by the IOM in collaboration with key stakeholders involved in migrant support and reintegration.
