The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has detained Alexander Ikwechegh, a House of Representatives member representing Aba North and South Constituency in Abia State, following allegations of assault on a Bolt driver, Mr. Stephen Abuwatseya. According to a police statement on Monday, Ikwechegh was questioned regarding an incident on October 27 at his residence on Zamfara Crescent, Maitama, Abuja.
Police investigations reveal that the dispute arose during a delivery from Abuwatseya, leading to an alleged physical altercation. FCT Commissioner of Police Olatunji Disu has ordered a thorough investigation, promising justice for all parties involved. “The command is committed to conducting an impartial investigation,” said FCT Police Public Relations Officer SP Josephine Adeh, adding that the investigation's findings would determine subsequent legal action.
A viral video purportedly capturing the incident shows Ikwechegh allegedly slapping Abuwatseya multiple times, accusing him of disrespect and threatening, “I can make this man disappear in the whole of Nigeria.” In the footage, the lawmaker is heard denying payment for Abuwatseya’s service, citing “disrespect.” Ikwechegh, who initially identified himself as a senator, later issued a public apology, stating, “I am deeply sorry for my actions and acknowledge that they were unacceptable and unbecoming of a public official.”
The House of Representatives expressed concern over the incident, urging restraint while police conclude their investigation. House Spokesperson Rotimi Akintunde stated, “The 10th Assembly holds itself to the highest standards of ethical conduct.” Meanwhile, several citizens have called for the lawmaker’s suspension, condemning the incident as “arrogant and insensitive.”
Ikwechegh’s political party, the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), also distanced itself from his actions. National Publicity Secretary Mazi Ejimofor Opara announced the party's intent to form a disciplinary committee to investigate the matter, promising sanctions if Ikwechegh is found culpable.
