Atiku Abubakar has emerged as the presidential candidate of the People's Democratic Party and is now given the mandate to be the flagbearer for the 2023 presidential election.

This is the 6th time the 75-year-old former Vice President is attempting to be President of Nigeria.

Atiku beat Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, Akwa Ibom Governor, Udom Emmanuel and former Senate President, Bukola Saraki. Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal had stepped down and endorsed Atiku, which many think gave Atiku an edge over others.

Mr Atiku scored 371 votes, followed by Wike who polled 237 votes. Saraki had 70 votes while

Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State got 38 votes.

Others are:
Mohammed - 38
Anyim Pius Anyim - 14
Mrs Tari Diana Oliver - 1
Sam Ohuabunwa - 1

In his acceptance speech, Atiku promised to fight insecurity where APC has failed. He enjoined the aggrieved PDP aspirants who lost to join him and let them work together and not resort to various law courts that could set the party backwards.

Atiku will likely be facing Bola Tinubu, if he won the APC Ticket or under any other party, Peter Obi who has pitched his tent with the Labour Party.

APC convention is expected to hold on the 6th and 7th of June 2023.
